SuperDeDuper's practical interface is easy enough to use, and we appreciate the instant user guide displayed on the right side. The program uses profiles to store information about search parameters and where to scan for duplicates.

A quick browse lets you easily add any particular drive or folder and process the search results based on your specifications.

These include searching for certain file types, filenames, content, and sizes. Impressively, the program can also search within ZIP archives, and can even include hidden and system files in the process. After completing a scan, the program displays a list of results, with options to launch or delete the files.

Note: the program deletes duplicates permanently.

Unlike similar tools in its class, it doesn't offer line-to-line comparison tools or delete options, such as sending files to the Recycle Bin or moving them to a different location. Sadly, the trial version only uncovers duplicates lower than 30KB. In the end, SuperDeDuper's bare-bones approach may work for casual computer users.

MZSplit is small enough to fit on a floppy disk, so you can take this no-install freeware just about anywhere. Its interface is bland but straightforward, with a browser to find files and radio buttons to choose size.

We like the simplicity of MZSplit's approach, but aren't so pleased with some of its limitations.

Only five preset split sizes are offered, from 1. 44MB up to 640MB, and there's no option to enter a custom size. You can't specify a directory for output files and probably its biggest drawback is it can't create self-uniting batch files.

In our tests, the app 1889 generally quick and effective, but this didn't quite make up for the lack of features that are typically 819 in other freeware file splitters.
